Overview Effect

Date: Fri, 18 Oct 2019 - Sat, 19 Oct 2019

Venue: New Market Square

Overview Effect is a breath-taking outdoor spectacle that celebrates the ambition and technical achievement of the 1969 moon landing. From the surface of the moon, we share the view of the Apollo 11 astronauts and appreciate their shift in understanding about the fragility of the planet we call home. Overview Effect is a psychedelic and atmospheric outdoor projection set to a stunning original soundtrack. It asks us to celebrate what the human race is capable of achieving, and consider the cost of the problems we choose to ignore.

Why "Overview Effect"?

The overview effect is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from outer space. From space, national boundaries vanish, the conflicts that divide people become less important and we see only the astounding beauty and diversity of the planet itself. This "big picture" view of the 1969 moon Landing and the 50 years since forms the common thread of our show.

With unwavering political will and the conviction of a team of the most brilliant minds of the time, the moon landing proved how much can be achieved in such a short time. Fifty years later, Overview Effect is a powerful reminder to look to the next challenge and where we can make a difference.

"I really believe that if the political leaders of the world could see their planet from a distance of 100,000 miles their outlook could be fundamentally changed."

Michael Collins (Apollo 11 Astronaut)

Overview Effect is a 10-minute projection shown on a loop throughout the evening. Suitable for all ages.
